Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, H.E Mr. Sering Modou Njie, on Friday, 7 August 2026, received Ms. Maria Dolores Artola Casariego, the newly appointed Chargé d’Affaires of the Diplomatic Antenna of the Kingdom of Spain in The Gambia. The discussions focused on a range of issues of mutual interest, including cooperation in the areas of security, energy, agriculture, health, education, and migration, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to deepening collaboration in these sectors. Hon. Minister Njie warmly welcomed Ms. Artola Casariego to The Gambia and conveyed his congratulations on her appointment. He underscored the longstanding and cordial relations between The Gambia and Spain, noting Spain’s important contribution to The Gambia’s socio-economic development and its continued support for the country’s development priorities. Hon. Minister further expressed appreciation to the Government of Spain for its continued support to The Gambia, particularly in relation to the recognition and documentation of Gambian nationals residing in Spainand welcomed Spain’s cooperation in addressing matters affecting the Gambian community. For her part, Ms. Artola Casariego conveyed the warm greetings of the Ambassador of Spain to The Gambia and expressed her readiness to engage closely with the Government of The Gambia during her tenure. She reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations and advancing ongoing programmes and exploring new areas of cooperation between the two countries. Ms. Artola Casariego assured her willingness to work closely with the Government of The Gambia and relevant institutions to further consolidate the great achievements registered in the bilateral relations between the two countries. 𝐁𝐀𝐍𝐉𝐔𝐋, 𝟏𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔: The Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, H.E Sering Modou Njie, held discussions with the Ambassador of the European Union to The Gambia, Her Excellency Immaculada Roca i Cortés, during a meeting at the Ministry on 7 August 2026. The meeting served as an opportunity for the two sides to reaffirm the longstanding partnership between The Gambia and the European Union and to explore ways of further expanding cooperation in areas of shared interest. Among the issues discussed were economic development, trade and investment, agriculture, education, tourism, migration, governance, youth empowerment and the strengthening of democratic and electoral institutions. Emphasis was placed on creating greater opportunities for private-sector investment and ensuring that economic cooperation translates into meaningful opportunities for young Gambians. Hon. Minister Njie welcomed the EU’s continued partnership with The Gambia and acknowledged its longstanding contribution to the country’s development priorities. He stressed the importance of maintaining a strong and forward-looking relationship with the EU, particularly at a time when The Gambia is seeking to accelerate economic transformation and broaden opportunities for its population. Ambassador Roca i Cortés highlighted areas ofenhanced European engagement and investment in The Gambia. She noted the encouraging developments in the country’s macroeconomic outlook and the importance of continued cooperation. The Ambassador further congratulated The Gambia on becoming the first country to ratify the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls. She cited the development as a significant step in strengthening the protection of the rights and welfare of women and girls. The EU Envoy also reiterated EU’s readiness to continue supporting The Gambia’s priorities in areas including food security, youth development, migration management and democratic governance. Discussions also touched on preparations for a potential EU Election Observation Mission in the context of the forthcoming Presidential Election in December 2026. The engagement reaffirmed the shared commitment of The Gambia and the European Union to sustaining a mutually beneficial partnership, with greater emphasis on economic opportunity, democratic governance and sustainable development.

𝐁𝐀𝐍𝐉𝐔𝐋, 7𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 2026: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad is pleased to announce that His Excellency Masanneh Nyuku Kinteh, Non‑Resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of The Gambia to the Republic of the Philippines, presented his Letters of Credence to His Excellency Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., President of the Republic of the Philippines, during an official ceremony held at Malacañang Palace in Manila on Tuesday, 4th August 2026. Presenting his credentials, Ambassador Kinteh conveyed the warm greetings and best wishes of His Excellency Adama Barrow, President of the Republic of The Gambia, to President Marcos Jr., the Government, and the people of the Republic of the Philippines. He reaffirmed The Gambia’s commitment to strengthening the longstanding friendship between the two countries and to deepening bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest, particularly agriculture, education, trade and investment, while fostering stronger people‑to‑people exchanges. President Marcos Jr. warmly welcomed Ambassador Kinteh and congratulated him on his appointment as Ambassador of the Republic of The Gambia to the Republic of the Philippines. The President expressed the commitment of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines to further strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation with The Gambia in areas of mutual interest. 𝐀𝐧𝐤𝐚𝐫𝐚, 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟 𝐓ü𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐲𝐞 𝟕𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔: A high-level Gambian delegation, led by Permanent Secretary II, Ms. Fatou Kinneh Jobe at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, comprising senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the President, successfully concluded an official visit to the Republic of Türkiye. The delegation was accompanied throughout the visit by H.E. Alkali Conteh, Ambassador of the Republic of The Gambia to the Republic of Türkiye, and officials of the Embassy of The Gambia in Ankara. The official visit was undertaken to further strengthen the longstanding relations between The Gambia and the Republic of Türkiye and expand cooperation in diplomacy, education, migration, consular and visa matters, capacity-building and institutional development. The programme featured high-level diplomatic engagements, institutional exchanges and discussions aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation and identifying new opportunities for collaboration in areas of mutual interest. 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 Ms. Fatou Kinneh Jobe, Permanent Secretary held a meeting with H.E. H. Ali Özel, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye. The discussions reaffirmed the excellent and longstanding relations between The Gambia and Türkiye and underscored the shared commitment of both countries to further strengthening bilateral cooperation. The two sides exchanged views on a broad range of issues relating to political, diplomatic and institutional cooperation, while also discussing opportunities for expanding collaboration in education, trade and investment, tourism, agriculture, higher education and capacity-building. Discussions also explored practical measures to strengthen cooperation on visa-related matters and consular services in order to further enhance the welfare of Gambian citizens in Türkiye and facilitate closer engagement between the two countries. PS Jobe also briefed the Deputy Minister on The Gambia’s initiative to establish a Foreign Service Academy and expressed the Government’s interest in benefiting from Türkiye’s experience in diplomatic training and professional development. She further proposed closer institutional cooperation between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs through technical exchanges, specialised training programmes and other initiatives aimed at strengthening diplomatic capacity. Ambassador Dr. İsmail Hakkı Musa, Director General of the Diplomacy Academy of the Republic of Türkiye. The discussions focused on Türkiye’s experience in diplomatic education and continuous professional development and explored opportunities for institutional cooperation between the Turkish Diplomacy Academy and the proposed Foreign Service Academy of The Gambia. Permanent Secretary Jobe expressed interest in developing structured cooperation aimed at strengthening professionalism, continuous learning and capacity within the Gambian Foreign Service. H.E. Ambassador Dr. İsmail Hakkı Musa welcomed The Gambia’s initiative to establish a Foreign Service Academy and expressed the Diplomacy Academy’s readiness to support the initiative. He reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to working closely with The Gambia in developing a strong and professional diplomatic training institution. 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐃𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐬 A key component of the official visit was Ms. Jobe’s keynote address to diplomat trainees at the Diplomacy Academy of the Republic of Türkiye under the theme “Diplomacy in a Changing World: Reflections from The Gambia.” Addressing the future diplomats of the Republic of Türkiye, Ms. Jobe reflected on the evolving demands of 21st-century diplomacy and the importance of developing competencies in areas including negotiation, economic diplomacy, strategic communication, international law, public diplomacy and geopolitical analysis. Drawing on her professional experience in public service and diplomacy including her assignments at The Gambia’s foreign missions abroad, she shared practical lessons on leadership, integrity, professionalism and results-oriented diplomacy. Ms. Jobe also introduced the trainees to The Gambia’s history, foreign-policy, development priorities and the longstanding and growing partnership between The Gambia and Türkiye, while encouraging greater engagement between Türkiye and Africa and highlighting the important role that future diplomats will play in strengthening bilateral relations. 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 The official programme also included engagements with the Foundation for Political, Economic and Social Research (SETA) and the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB). At SETA, the delegation exchanged views on policy research, strategic analysis and geopolitical affairs, with particular attention to the role of research and strategic foresight in supporting foreign-policy formulation and informed decision-making. Discussions also explored potential areas of institutional cooperation, including policy dialogue, research exchanges, expert consultations, seminars and capacity-building for diplomats, government officials and researchers. At YTB, the delegation was received by Vice President Mr. Murat Kazancı and briefed on the institution’s mandate and programmes, including the Türkiye Scholarships Programme and its engagement with international students and communities. The discussions explored opportunities to further strengthen educational and professional exchanges between The Gambia and Türkiye, including increased access to educational and capacity-building opportunities for Gambians, alumni engagement and cooperation in human-capital development. During the visit, the Permanent Secretary commended the Ambassador and the Mission staff for their dedication, professionalism and commitment to advancing The Gambia’s interests and strengthening the excellent bilateral relations between The Gambia and the Republic of Türkiye. She encouraged them to continue serving with distinction and reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for the important work of the Mission. PS Jobe also signed the Embassy’s Visitors’ Book, expressing her appreciation for the warm reception accorded to the delegation and conveying her best wishes for the continued success of the Mission. The meeting reaffirmed the longstanding friendship and excellent relations between the two sister Republics and underscored their shared commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors. The two Heads of State held cordial and productive discussions on the current state of relations between The Gambia and Gabon and explored new opportunities to strengthen cooperation in political and diplomatic affairs, trade and investment, agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, tourism and other areas of mutual interest. They also reaffirmed their common commitment to promoting sustainable development, regional peace and stability, and enhancing collaboration within the African Union and other multilateral fora. A major highlight of today’s programme was the signing of several landmark bilateral instruments, which represent a significant milestone in the growing partnership between The Gambia and the Gabonese Republic. These agreements provide a strong institutional and legal framework for expanding cooperation and ensuring the effective implementation of joint initiatives between the two countries. The instruments signed include: 1. 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 – establishing a broad framework for cooperation across various sectors of mutual interest and reinforcing the overall bilateral partnership. 2. This important agreement will promote more frequent high-level visits, strengthen institutional collaboration, facilitate official engagements, and further deepen diplomatic relations between The Gambia and Gabon. It also reflects the high level of trust, confidence and friendship that exists between the two Governments. The two Heads of State also signed a 𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞́, reaffirming their shared commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual benefit. The Joint Communiqué reflects the common vision of both Leaders to build a stronger strategic partnership founded on mutual respect, solidarity and shared aspirations for peace, prosperity and sustainable development. It further underscores their commitment to translating the excellent political relations between the two countries into concrete programmes and initiatives that will improve the lives of their peoples. The Government of the Republic of The Gambia extends its deepest condolences to the Government and people of Japan and conveys its heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families. The Gambia also wishes those injured a full and speedy recovery and expresses its sincere solidarity with all those affected by this tragic disaster. As Japan continues its rescue, relief and recovery efforts, The Gambia commends the prompt and coordinated response of the Japanese authorities, emergency services, humanitarian personnel and volunteers working tirelessly to assist affected communities. 𝟒𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐎𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐔 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐬 𝐀𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐚 𝐁𝐀𝐍𝐉𝐔𝐋, 𝟐𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔: On Tuesday 28th July 2026, the Executive Council of the African Union officially opened its 49th Ordinary Session, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, bringing together Foreign Affairs Ministers, Heads of AU Organs, Missions, UN Agencies, partners, and dignitaries from across the continent. The two-day session is deliberating on a wide range of strategic priorities under Agenda 2063, including this year’s AU Theme: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve Agenda 2063.” Over the course of the session, the Council is also reviewing reports from key committees, including the Ministerial Committee on African Candidatures within the International System, the F15 Committee of Finance Ministers, and the Committee on Ratification of OAU/AU Treaties, before adopting its final decisions on 29 July 2026. Delivering The Gambia’s statement on the AU Theme of the Year progress report, Ambassador Lang Yabou, Permanent Secretary I, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that the alarming statistics on water and sanitation access represent more than numbers, they represent families and communities whose potential remains constrained by this fundamental deficit. The Gambia reaffirmed water and sanitation as a fundamental human right, welcomed the mainstreaming of the Africa Water Vision 2063 into national frameworks, and called for greater private sector investment in climate resilient water infrastructure. “The multifaceted challenges outlined in this report require a coordinated continental response that harness the collective strength of our institutions and partnerships for our common good. The Gambia therefore support the call for strengthened collaboration among governments, regional institutions, financial institutions, the private sector, civil society organizations and development partners to improve access to water. This is a fundamental requirement for our development and well-being of our people and communities”. On the Permanent Representatives Committee’s Report, The Gambia commended the AU for its unified continental position, strengthening Africa’s voice in G20 engagements and global strategic partnerships. “Africa must position itself as an active actor in shaping its future, guided by unity, solidarity, purpose and a shared vision” asserted Ambassador Yabou. In his opening remarks, AU Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf noted that the Council is meeting amid heightened global uncertainty and complex geopolitical shifts affecting Africa’s economies. He raised concerns over terrorism and violent extremism on the continent, reaffirming the AU’s solidarity with Member States in the Sahel, and called for accelerated ratification of outstanding AU legal instruments to strengthen the Union’s institutions. For his part, H.E. Ambassador Édouard Bizimana, Chairperson of the Executive Council, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Burundi, underscored Africa’s growing role on the global stage, pointing to the continent’s G20 membership as a historic milestone, and called for unity in defending Africa’s common positions on issues like UN Security Council reform. Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, H.E. Gedion Timothewos, welcomed delegates and emphasized the need for the AU to serve as a credible, authentic voice for Africa on the world stage. A clear demonstration of The Gambia’s active role in shaping Africa’s collective future, is joining fellow Member States in this important gathering shaping the continent’s collective priorities. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐚’𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐬 𝐀𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐚 𝐁𝐀𝐍𝐉𝐔𝐋, 𝟐𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔: The Honourable Justice Veronic Wright, The Gambia’s candidate for Judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC), was on Monday 27th July 2026 presented before the African Union’s Ministerial Committee on Candidatures in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia a key step in her campaign ahead of the ICC judicial elections to be held in New York in December 2026. The presentation was led by Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Ambassador Lang Yabou, who highlighted Justice Wright’s extensive experience and expertise in international criminal law, and the integrity and competence she brings to the role. Justice Wright is contesting under List A. In her address, Justice Wright shared her vision for a stronger, more effective, and independent ICC, one that delivers justice for victims of the most serious international crimes while assuring a fair trial for those accused before it. The Committee has since reported to the AU Executive Council, noting all eight African candidates presented for the ICC judicial elections. Justice Wright’s campaign continues as she engages with States Parties to the Rome Statute in the lead-up to December’s elections. The Gambia look forward to the support of ICC Member States for the success of her candidacy.
