Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Bid Farewell to outgoing Mauritanian Ambassador

On Saturday, 16th September 2023, the Permanent Secretary II of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Ambassador Habib T.B. Jarra, representing the Honorable Minister, H.E. Dr. Mamadou Tangara, attended a farewell gathering organized by the Mauritanian Community in The Gambia in honor of the outgoing Mauritanian Ambassador to The Gambia, H.E. Sidi Mohamed Mohamed Radhi. The event took place on Saturday evening at the African Princess Hotel. During the ceremony, PS Jarra on behalf of the Honorable Minister conveyed his gratitude to the outgoing Ambassador H.E. Sidi Mohamed for representing the Muritainian government and contributing immensely to the bilateral between the Republic of The Gambia and the Islamic Republic of Muritania. He applauded the outgoing diplomat for building strong relationships for the interest of both countries during his tour of duty.  Ambassador Jarra commended him for the support on the development aspect of The Gambia and for citizens of Mauritania not violating the laws of the country but rather contributing to the economic growth of The Gambia. Ambassador Jarra was accompanied to the event by Counsellor Abdoulie Jallow from the African Affairs Directorate of MOFA and Protocol Officer Bai Ebrima Jobe. In attendance was H.E. Mr. Aboul Maaly, the Honorary Consul and Head of the Mauritanian Community in The Gambia. The event followed a farewell meeting between H.E. President Adama Barrow and H.E. Ambassador Sidi Mohamed, which occurred on the preceding Friday.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs receives office equipment from International Organisation for Migration

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad (MOFA) on Friday received office equipment from the International Organisation for Migration (OIM) at the request of the Diaspora Affairs Division of the Ministry. The equipment were received by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Sulayman Omar Njie, for onward delivery to the Diaspora Affairs Division. The donated items were: 4 laptops, 4 all in one coloured printers, 4 Wi-Fi routers, 4 executive chairs, 4 file cupboard, 4 file tray, 6 reception area chairs, 1 projector, 1 projector screen, 4 office desk with drawers, 4 uninterrupted power supply (UPS) 650 VA, 4 electrical adapters, 1 office TV, 1 office fridge, 1 paper shredder, 1 portable flat printer with scanner, 4 desktop lights and 10 boxes of white paper. Apparently, the donation is part of support to boost the quality of services at the Diaspora Division. Receiving the items on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Permanent Secretary Sulayman Omar Njie, thanked IOM for the gesture and assured that the equipment would greatly enhance work at the Division, the Ministry and by extension the Government. He said the donation was timely as the Ministry planned to move to its new complex situated at the entrance of Banjul. He further disclosed that considerations are at an advanced stage of recruiting new staff with a view to surging the capacity and value addition of the Diaspora Division.

Press Release- Successful Repatriation of Gambians Following the Eruption of Conflict in Sudan

The Government of The Gambia through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad wishes to inform the general public that on Wednesday 10th May 2023, 57 Gambian citizens (56 students and one professional football player) arrived in Banjul as part of the sixty-six (66) Gambians that were successfully repatriated from Sudan to Jeddah, following the eruption of fighting in the capital, Khartoum, in mid-April. On receiving the returnees at the Ministry on behalf of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Mamadou Tangara, the Permanent Secretary I, Ambassador Lang Yabou, thanked Almighty Allah for making it possible to safely evacuate all Gambian citizens from Sudan. He welcomed the students home and advised them to remain strong. “Moving forward, take this development as a step in your life and career. It is not the end and you must continue to have hope and belief that, after this experience, you would emerge stronger. Everything in life happens for a reason and as people with faith, we must always remain strong in every situation that we find ourselves in.” “The Government is aware that some of you have very short time left to finish your studies and some have couple of years left. In recognition of this, His Excellency, the President has given approval for MOFA to work with you and all stakeholders to find solutions that would enable you to complete your studies and MOFA would work with you to explore all possibilities both in the country and outside,” posited Ambassador Yabou. Permanent Secretary Yabou on behalf of the Hon. Minister and the entire staff of MOFA, extended heartfelt appreciation to His Excellency the President of the Republic and the entire Cabinet, the Government and the People of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the National Assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Chief of Staff to the President, the Director General SIS and their overseas partners, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, MOFA Staff,  Members of the National Coordination Mechanism on Migration,  H.E Ambassador Omar G. Sallah and Team in Riyadh, Charge D’Affaires Mr. Burama Sanneh and Team at the Consulate General in Jeddah, Dr. Aboubaccarr Jeng, a Gambian working with the UN and his wife, the Executive of the Student Association in the Sudan, Gambian Missions in Riyadh, New York, Dakar, France, Addis, etc, IOM, Red Cross, the Media and the entire Gambian population especially the families of the affected persons for their patience during a difficult period. Mr. Burama Sanneh, Charge D’Affaires, Consulate General of The Gambia in Jeddah who accompanied the students to Banjul and Representatives of the Student Association also spoke during the gathering, expressing their gratitude to His Excellency, the President, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Consulate General of The Gambia in Jeddah and the entire Government and People of The Gambia. Each student was given a token amount by the Ministry to serve as transport fares to help them get to their respective homes. On the 15th April 2023, fighting erupted in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, between regular Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). On Sunday 16th April, contacts were established between the 59 (7 females, 52 males) Gambian students at the International University of Africa in Khartoum and various Gambian authorities following which, a comprehensive list was provided to the Consulate General in Jeddah and the Ministry. The same Sunday 16th April, engagements started between the Office of the President, MOFA and the SIS and in the evening, MOFA issued a Press Release conveying Government’s position which includes expressing serious concerns, calling for an immediate ceasefire, cessation of hostilities, establishment of a humanitarian corridor and urging all the parties to engage in inclusive political dialogue to address their grievances as well as called on all Gambians home and in Sudan to remain calm as Government undertakes the necessary steps to assist its nationals within the conflict zone in the Sudan. In the morning of Monday 17th April, MOFA contacted a number of The Gambia’s partners and friends to seek for evacuation help. On the 25th April, Gambians were evacuated by bus from Khartoum to Port Sudan and on the 27th April, they were transported from Port Sudan by the Saudi Royal Navy to Jeddah where they were hosted in Habitat Hotel prior to their departure for Banjul on Monday 8th May 2023. The occasion was also witnessed by Ambassador Habib T.B. Jarra, Permanent Secretary II, Directors, a cross section of MOFA staff and moderated by Mrs. Fatou Njie, Director, Asian Affairs Directorate.

Foreign Minister assures China of Gambia’s Support to Multilateralism, Win–Win cooperation

The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mamadou Tangara, has reassured the Government of the People’s Republic of China through its Embassy in Banjul that the Government of The Gambia would always support the promotion of multilateralism, win – win cooperation, the belt and road initiative and the development framework defined by the Forum on China – Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). “Likewise, we will also continue to stand firm with the people of China, in respect to the one China principle,” Foreign Minister Tangara posited. He made these remarks on the occasion of the 71st National Day Anniversary celebration held on the 29th September 2020 at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Bijilo. The ceremony took the form of mini virtual function. He adds “as we continue on the path towards our National Development Plan objectives, we trust in your cooperation at all times. Moreover, we continue to welcome investments, tourists, and professionals from China in the same manner we pursue the actualisation of the dictates of our bilateral agreements. Together we are stronger, and together we can make the world a better place.” China’s fight on Covid -19 Minister Tangara said The Gambia salutes China for charting the way forward on cooperation in the post-pandemic era as illustrated by the outcome of the successful, extraordinary China and Africa Summit on Solidarity against COVID-19 held in June 2020. He said with concerted efforts, Gambia, China and the world will defeat challenges faced. He indicated that China has invested and continues to invest heavily in the future of Africa adding that numerous Chinese companies are working in many sectors of The Gambian economy to uplift infrastructure as demonstrated by the construction of the International Conference Centre and roads and bridges project in URR.

Spanish Charge d’Affaires paid a courtesy call

In a similar engagement, the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs received the Charge d’Affaires of the Diplomatic Antenna of the Kingdom ofSpain to The Gambia, Ms. Ana Gracia Gallego, in his office in Banjul on Monday 21st September 2020. Ms. Gallego was there to pay a courtesy call on the Foreign Minister. Dr.Tangara in his remark welcomed the Spanish Charge d’Affaires to The Gambia and assured her of the Government’s strong commitment to collaborate and work with the Spanish Government for the development of both countries. He said collaboration is needed in lot of areas but most especially in the fight against human trafficking. He calls for partnership in the process of sensitisation. Commenting on the position of her Government, Charge d’Affaires Ana Gracia Gallego said efforts are underway to collaborate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice to trace and apprehend traffickers in The Gambia and Spain. She announced her Government will support The Gambia’s transition process adding that Spain also went through a period of transition some 40 years ago. Ms. Gallego said hurdles on the route to attain consolidated democracy would be surmounted with commitment and perseverance.

Gambia Hosts Ministerial Retreat of The African Union Peace and Security Council

The Republic of The Gambia has hosted the the African Union Commission ministerial retreat of the Peace and Security Council on the protection of the rights and welfare of children in conflict. The high-level convergence, held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center from 4th -5th December2023, discussed the situation of African children in conflict zones as the continent continues to be plagued by instability. During the opening session, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, H.E Dr Mamadou Tangara, highlighted that the retreat is well-suited to answer vital questions in furthering the rights and protection of the African child. Honourable Tangara commended the African Union Commission and the various strategic partners for their great efforts in addressing the rights of children in conflict situations and post-conflict recovery. FM Tangara further stressed that the Republic of The Gambia, as the home of the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights (ACHPR), has a long affinity to the promotion and protection of human rights, and the rule of law,. The Commissioner of Political Affairs Peace, Security and African Union Commission Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, praised the collaboration with member states, international partners and civil societies to build an environment on the continent i which every child has the right to protection and shared values. Ambassador Adeoye  further said he is convinced that they will have fruitful deliberations in the course of the sessions towards the realisation of the Agenda 2026, which is not only firmly committed to build Africa fit for its children but equally invest in children fit for a peaceful, secured and fully integrated Africa. The Deputy Speaker of the National Children’s Parliament of Nigeria, Ibrahim Sunoma, reiterated the innocence and vulnerabilities of children during conflict, war and their voices have been echoed in speeches but empty promises alone cannot heal wounds of the children. The young activist said this is not a mere gathering of dignitaries but a gathering where actions must be taken. “What we the children expect from this conference are concrete actions that will sow seeds of tangible change,” he said.

FM Tangara Receives Credentials of Qatari Ambassador

His Excellency Dr. Mamadou Tangara, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, received Copies of Letters of Credence of the newly appointed Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the Republic of The Gambia, His Excellency Muhammad Ali Salim Ali Al-Kawari. In receiving the credentials, Foreign Minister Tangara warmly welcomed and congratulated the newly appointed Ambassador and commended Qatar for successfully hosting the World Cup 2022. Fm Tangara acknowledged the previous Ambassador and his team’s amazing efforts. The Foreign Minister assured Ambassador Al-Kawari of Gambia’s continuous support. He also assured him of his open-door policy to collaborate and strengthen the diplomatic relations between the two states. Ambassador Al-Kawari extended the greetings of Qatar’s Foreign Minister to his counterpart, recognizing the positive relationship between the two countries and expressing his gratitude for the support from The Gambia Government. The two diplomats interacted and reiterated the need to strengthen the ties and explore more areas of cooperation.
