𝐁𝐀𝐍𝐉𝐔𝐋, 𝟐𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓: On the margins of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9), the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad of the Republic of The Gambia, Hon. Sering Modou Njie, held a bilateral meeting with the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa, Hon. Ronald Lamola, on Friday, 22 August 2025. The two Ministers reaffirmed the longstanding bonds of friendship and solidarity between The Gambia and South Africa, rooted in the shared values of African unity, mutual respect, and cooperation. Both sides welcomed the opportunity to further strengthen their bilateral partnership across multiple sectors of mutual interest. During the discussions, the Ministers agreed on the importance of deepening cooperation through the signing of a Mutual Visa Exemption Agreement between the Republic of The Gambia and the Republic of South Africa. Once finalized, this agreement will facilitate the movement of people, foster closer ties, and enhance business, tourism, and cultural exchanges between the two nations. 𝐁𝐀𝐍𝐉𝐔𝐋, 𝟐𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓: The Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, His Excellency Sering Modou Njie, held a meeting with Mr. ANDO Naoki, Senior Vice President for Africa at the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), on the margins of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9) in Yokohama, Japan. The Foreign Minister of The Gambia commended the excellent bilateral relations between the Government of the Republic of The Gambia and the Government of Japan relations firmly anchored on mutual benefit, trust, and shared values. He expressed profound gratitude to the Government of Japan for its support to the fisheries sector, provision of safe drinking water, scholarships, and assistance to the agriculture sector. The Honourable Minister further reaffirmed the Government of The Gambia’s readiness to deepen and broaden bilateral cooperation with Japan to cover other priority areas. For his part, Mr. ANDO Naoki welcomed the Honourable Minister to Japan and expressed his appreciation for the longstanding partnership between the two countries. He underscored JICA’s significant contributions to the fisheries and agriculture sectors and reaffirmed JICA’s commitment to supporting these vital sectors. Minister IWAYA emphasized Japan’s commitment to deepening ties with The Gambia, highlighting shared values such as democracy and the rule of law. Ambassador Ndure congratulated Minister Njie on his recent appointment and proposed the formation of an association that would represent former ambassadors and retired diplomats. This group, he explained, would serve as a guide to the younger generation, helping The Gambia nurture seasoned and professional diplomats capable of effectively representing the nation on the global stage. He also shared the work plan for the proposed association already presented to other ambassadors and formally handed a copy to the Ministry. Minister Njie warmly welcomed the initiative, stressing the importance of working together as a diplomatic community to share experiences and expertise. He noted the Ministry’s plans to establish a Diplomatic Academy and expressed his intention to collaborate with the proposed association so that new and serving diplomats can benefit from the mentorship of seasoned ambassadors. His Excellency Mr. Adama Barrow, President of the Republic of The Gambia, officially opened the Sahel Governance Forum at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in Banjul, a landmark event bringing together leaders, experts, civil society, and international partners to chart a new path for governance, peace, and regional cooperation in the Sahel. In his keynote address, President Barrow called for bold actions: “Let this Forum be a catalyst for change… where governance works for all, where trust is restored, and every citizen feels seen, heard, and valued.” Hon. The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France, Mr. Jean-Noël Barrot, received his Gambian counterpart, Mr. Sering Modou Njie, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, at the Quai d’Orsay on Thursday, July 24, 2025. This first meeting between the two ministers highlighted the excellence of Franco-Gambian relations, which have been experiencing a new momentum since the return to democracy in The Gambia in 2017.
