The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad is pleased to announce the resumption of diplomatic ties between the Republic of The Gambia and the Islamic Republic of Iran on July 29th 2024. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mamadou Tangara met with his counterpart, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Bagheri in Tehran, Iran. The two signed the Communiqué on the resumption of diplomatic relations between The Gambia and Iran. The two Ministers agreed to build friendly bilateral ties between the two countries based on mutual respect, equality and common interests. This development comes after a series of high-level engagements between the representatives of the two countries.

Gambia hosts Interregional Dialogue on the Reviews of the Global Compact for Migration for Interstate Consultation Mechanisms on Migration in Africa and the Americas

The International Organization for Migration, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the United Network on Migration in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, hosted the Interregional Dialogue on the Reviews of the Global Compact for Migration for Interstate Consultation Mechanisms on Migration in Africa and the Americas on 23rd and 24th July 2024. The two-day workshop aimed to enhance cooperation between Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean regions on migration issues, with a focus on labour mobility and the protection of migrant workers. This initiative aims to improve information sharing, review the progress of the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) and explore collaboration opportunities at the global, regional and cross-regional levels. In the opening remarks, the representative from the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR), Ms. Yvonne Masara said, “ we recognize the Government of The Gambia for its dedication and commitment to the GCM and for creating a comprehensive framework which will aim to address the challenges, opportunities and issues surrounding migration”. She also emphasized the importance of addressing human rights compliance issues in migration governance. Representing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Permanent Secretary I, Ambassador Lang Yabou, welcomed the guests from various countries to The Gambia and reaffirmed the government’s commitment, cooperation and solidarity in developing an effective global migration governance framework. He stated that The Gambia is one of the Global Champions of the Global Compact on Migration because like many other countries, is deeply affected by migration. Therefore, “It is important to have a wholesome approach to manage migration effectively.” he continued. Ambassador Yabou encouraged all stakeholders at all levels to continue to engage in constructive dialogue to strengthen collective efforts which will promote safe, orderly and regular migration as well as protect the rights of migrants and harness the potential of migration for sustainable development. The event was attended by various officials from across the international community and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other institutions of government.

Shelter Afrique pays a courtesy visit to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad

The Managing Director of Shelter Afrique, Mr. Thierno-Habib Hann and Regional Representative, Ms. Elizabeth Ogonegbu visited the Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Hon. Dr. Mamadou Tangara at his office in Banjul. Director Hann gave a summary of the work of his institution and their achievements across the continent. Shelter Afrique is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya and it was founded by the African Union Heads of State and Government. The Gambia was a founding member of Shelter Afrique in 1982. Its main aim is to provide affordable housing for all Africans. Therefore, Director Hann deemed it fitting to brief the Minister for Foreign Affairs regarding his visit to The Gambia after meeting his counterparts at the Ministry of Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs. Dr. Tangara reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the initiatives of Shelter Afrique and said they were important to low-income earners, civil servants and the youth. He encouraged the representatives of Shelter Afrique to continue to engage the relevant institutions of the Government of The Gambia to create a greater understanding of its work and enable The Gambia to successfully harness the benefit of her membership in Shelter Afrique.

Spanish Ambassador-Designate, Ms. Maria Dolores Rios presents Letters of Credence to Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Dr. Mamadou Tangara

  The Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Hon. Dr. Mamadou Tangara met with Ms. Maria Dolores Rios, Ambassador-Designate from the Kingdom of Spain, to receive copies of her Letters of Credence. After presenting her credentials, the two briefly discussed pertinent bilateral matters and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen relations between The Gambia and Spain. Dr. Tangara thanked the Government and people of the Kingdom of Spain for the continued support in the education and agriculture sectors which he has added value to national development.

The Gambia explores the possible launching of Starlink services

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Hon.  Dr. Mamadou Tangara held a virtual meeting with Mr. Elon Musk, businessman and owner of the international company, Starlink. Currently, Starlink is offering services of a satellite internet constellation which is currently providing internet coverage to approximately 80 countries. The two parties discussed ideas around bridging the digital divide, the harmonization of transformative opportunities of technologies as well as how to provide easy access to technologies for schools to deliver quality education in STEM. Furthermore, platforms for quality service delivery in other sectors and how Starlink can help accelerate social development as a way forward were also discussed. Following this virtual meeting, Starlink Director of Global Licensing and Activation, Mr. Ben MacWilliams, met with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Dr. Mamadou Tangara at his office in Banjul on 23rd July 2024. This is following Mr. MacWilliam’s meetings with the leadership of the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) and the Minister for Information who is currently overseeing the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy The two parties discussed issues around access to the internet and how it can be used to enhance service delivery in various sectors such as education, digital technologies, access to information and the internet. Dr. Mamadou Tangara emphasized that it was a welcome initiative and would create significant opportunities for the young people in The Gambia to engage and take advantage of the various platforms supporting 21st-century economies. He also welcomed the idea of exploring emerging technologies to address key issues in the healthcare and education sectors. Furthermore, Dr. Tangara reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhance service delivery in various sectors.

Ghanaian President His Excellency Nana Akufo Addo on a state visit to The Gambia

His Excellency Nana Akufo Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana was on a one-day State Visit to the Republic of The Gambia on Friday, July 12th 2024. President Akufo Addo was received at the Banjul International Airport by His Excellency President Adama Barrow and various Cabinet Ministers including the Minister for Foreign Affairs and other high-level government officials During his visit, President Akufo Addo had a bilateral meeting with President Adama Barrow where they discussed the long-standing relationship between the two countries and the various sectors of collaboration especially in the education sector. President Akufo Addo also visited the Ghanaian ECOMIG contingent in Barra, was hosted to a state lunch by President Barrow and bade farewell at the Banjul International Airport.

Special Envoy of Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania comes to The Gambia

Hon. Ummy Mwalimu (MP), Minister for Health of the United Republic of Tanzania and her delegation landed in The Gambia on Friday, July 12, 2024, as the Special Envoy of Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania. Hon. Mwalimu was received by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Dr. Mamadou Tangara at the Banjul International Airport. The two discussed pertinent bilateral matters between the two countries and proceeded to meet His Excellency President Adama Barrow to deliver the message from Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan. President Barrow buttressed the importance of the relationship between The Gambia and Tanzania and recognized the great strides being made by Tanzania under the leadership of President Suluhu Hassan. Hon. Mwalimu thanked President Barrow for granting audience to her and her team and expressed that Tanzania looks forward to continued cooperation with The Gambia.

The Gambia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, His Excellency Dr. Mamadou Tangara is in Abuja, Nigeria attending the 52nd Session of the Mediation and Security Council being held at Ministerial level. The meeting aims to assess the sub-region political, peace, and security situation.

In his opening statement, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, mentioned that at the recently concluded ambassadorial preparatory meeting, extensive deliberations were held on the Commission's efforts in addressing developments in the political, security, and humanitarian situation of the sub-region. Furthermore, Dr. Touray announced that the upcoming ECOWAS Summit will consider Memoranda on the sub-region's political, peace, and security situation. The Summit will also critically assess the Memorandum on the operationalisation of the ECOWAS Security Architecture and the report of the meeting of Finance and Defense Ministers. The Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister, His Excellency Yusuf Tuggar, who doubles as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, highlighted terrorism as one of the major threats the Community is facing. he urged the meeting to adopt appropriate response measures in addressing the challenges being faced by the member states. Spanish Foreign Minister visits The Gambia to further strengthen bilateral ties

On Wednesday, 26th June 2024, His Excellency Dr. Mamadou Tangara, Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad received the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, His Excellency Jose Manuel Albares Bueno, and his delegation at his office in Banjul. H.E Bueno’s visit to The Gambia entailed a series of high-level engagements with top government officials, including His Excellency President Adama Barrow. During these meetings, H.E Bueno indicated that West Africa is a priority region for Spain and commended The Gambia for promoting and being an example of peace and stability within the sub-region. Dr. Tangara welcomed H.E Bueno and his delegation to The Gambia and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening the collaboration between the two countries. The Ministers and technicians had discussions on health, education, migration, security, anti-crime as well as democracy, human rights issues, and economic and business relations between The Gambia and Spain.

Fourth Gambia-Guinea Bissau Joint Commission

A delegation led by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, His Excellency Dr. Mamadou Tangara will be in Bissau from 26 – 28 June 2024 to participate in the Fourth Joint Commission between the Republic of The Gambia and the Republic of Guinea Bissau. The Joint Commission will serve as an excellent interlocutor to jointly examine and agree on the modalities for mutually beneficial cooperation and collaboration between the Governments and Peoples of the two countries. Discussions will be focused on strategic sectors of the economies of the Republic of The Gambia and the Republic of Guinea Bissau and on elevating the historic and friendly ties that exist between the peoples of the two countries. Minister Dr. Tangara will be accompanied by senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad and other Ministries and institutions of the Government of The Gambia.
